Inclusion of E-Books in Library Accession Register
I read the questions regarding the e-books management by Dr. D. Sheeba Jebaseeli Jasmine, CIPET. These are some of the very basic questions in this area. My answers based on the experience are provided below. It is essential to maintain a register for the purchased e-books. It can be included in the main accession register or otherwise. A separate register will give you a clear picture about your digital collection including its total number and the cost involved. Along with the purchase of metadata, the publisher provides you metadata in MARC format, which you can import into your software. The user who finds an e-book can directly open the book from the OPAC end of your software. You have to continuously give propaganda about e-books procured by you. No publisher allows you to download and keep the digital files related to e-books in a local server. It will be mentioned in the agreement signed between the institution and the publisher. Some publishers provide the e-books in complete files; some provide it as separate pdf files. It depends on the publisher policy. However no publisher allows you a continuous systematic downloading. Users can down load the books they need and use them at their convenience. You can include the data regarding the purchased e-books and their usage (The publishers will provide you the usage data on request) in your profile reports. Dr GOPAKUMAR V.
