Like sankaran I too don't advocate for another fresh association for LIS. It creates confusion and becomes one more addition to the existing number of LIS associations. Already Indian Library Association (ILA) has become popular and generic in nature for all categories of library professionals. Let us strengthen ILA by making it as an apex body to include all library professionals as its members. The membership to ILA should be mandatory for all professionals irrespective of type of library and it should function from gross-root level. The local chapters should identify all the professionals in that region and motivate them to get inducted to ILA (they may approach the parent institutions for membership). Let us burry our past bitter experiences and individual differences with associations/officers, and come forward to have a healthy and very powerful in policy making and at the same time more academic in its functions. Like AMA and INFORMS, the transformed ILA can start publishing many reputed journals in the field. I am sure our professionals will welcome the re-charged ILA and support its academic activities too. The other specialized LIS associations like iaslic, MANLIBNET, IALA, KLA, SIS etc can become associate Organs of ILA and focus on specific categories of professionals ... Dear Sir, I really appreciate your forming ILA as an apex institution for library professionals. In Mumbai there is no strong organisation/association for and of this profession. I am teaching for Certificate course in LIS run by Granth Sanchanalaya Marashatra Govt.The future and further scope of these students is in dark .I always feel to work on following fields for our profession 1) coaching classes for Bilb & Mlib which are running on distance education options by many universities 2)Internship like other technical courses for 6 months 3)Workshops for new technologies in reservation and retrieval 4)A platform to open themselves on problem discussions 5)A stong recommendation of apex institution for job allocation in corporate /public libraries as well as academic libraries 6)Librarian's active role and his deputation for many imprtant committees of the parent organisation 7)The centers of Apex ILA at all state levels with transperent committee 8)The easy approach to ILA state level authority for problem solution of a small institutional librarian I shall be glad to inform you and as well sad to tell you that we the Librarians in Bandra-Kurla Complex are trying to build a network of Librarians for sharing the open resources but yes only few (5) organisations showed the interest and others !Still we have not lost the battle. One more thing there are many organisations in Mumbai where no library professional is posted as Librarian but the senior manager is carrying the responsibilities and who is at his due retirement of 2 to 3 years.
