This has reference to the mail dt.27th April, 2018 from Dr.RuchaR.Kamath
on stock-verification of Department Libraries.
Department Libraries (DL) take birth from the small collection of
booksshared by Dept Staff, books donated by retiring staff and
ex-students. In someInstitutes the Director/Principal may also provide
funds to buy books for DL.The DLs are generally under the administrative
control of Head-Of-the-Departmentsof concerned Branch/Departments and
hence the Chief Librarian of CentralLibrary has no hold on them.
Now, the question is who should conduct the stock-verification of DLs?
The Chief Librarian has enough responsibilities such as collection
planning keeping in mind entire Institute's academic programmes, timely
acquisition and processing, circulation of books and other reading
materials. He is also responsible formanaging e-resources, staff
development, user education programmes, etc.Inadequate staff is one
problem of the problem faced by many Librarians. Therefore, in such a
situation it is neither fair nor logical toask/instruct Chief Librarian of
Central Library to carry out stock-verificationof DLs.Â
However, he can provide necessary guidance to "In-charge persons"of DL to
manage their activities including stock-verification upon request fromthe
HODs.
