Report on 'Book Talk in LIS' by Sri. L.J. Haravu

Dear LIS Friends, Greetings from MyLISA Mysuru! “Case study approach makes library managers more effective decision makers” - L.J. Haravu, editor of ‘Case Studies for Teaching Library Management’ 'Teachers of Library and Information Science will find the case study method useful in training students and in library management. Typical problem situations faced in libraries cannot be taught theoretically and therefore the Case Method is used. The Case Method can also be used by library managers in effective decision making as it will involve staff at all levels in a democratic manner to address problems related to personnel, that related to users of the library, threats from external competition, particularly from the Internet, and so on' thus said Sri. L.J. Haravu. Sri. L.J. Haravu, Former Senior Manager of Library & Documentation Services, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) was talking about the book titled, “Case Studies for Teaching Library Management” authored by N.G. Satish and Anil Takalkar published by Kesavan Institute of Information and Knowledge Management (KIIKM), Hyderabad, and edited by him, on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysuru. He was was the invited speaker for Mysore Librarians & Information Scientists Association (MyLISA)’s ‘Book Talk in Library Science Series’. He spoke of the why and what of case studies, how a case is should be presented by teachers and advantages of using this method in involving students in analysis and discussion in problem solving. The role of teachers and students in the use case studies in was presented. A hypothetical Case Study published in the book about the resistance of faculty members in a college to hold on to text books denying students access to these was opened for discussion leading to lively discussion followed by suggestions for solution to the problem presented in the case study. The talk was well received and audience enjoyed the case discussion during the session. Earlier Dr. P. Sarasvathy, Secretary, MyLISA welcomed the gathering the introduced the speaker. Dr. M. Chandrashekara, President, MyLISA presided over the function. Dr. Chandrashekara summarized the talk and highlighted the importance of case method of teaching in Library and Information Science.
