Faculty in which LISc to be grouped

Dear Friends, I have a doubt about, in which faculty the discipline of Library and Information Science should be included in university structure, such as: Faulty of Science and Technology Faculty of Social Sciences Faculty of Commerce Faculty of Law Faculty of Education In the University of Mysore, the discipline of Library and Information Science is grouped under the faculty of Science & Technology. In some places it comes under the faculty of social sciences. So, my request to the professionals is, under which subject (faculty) Library and Information Science should be included. Valuable inputs of the LIS members will be highly appreciated in this regard. -- With Warm Regards Dr. Khaiser Jahan Begum Professor Department of Studies in Library and Information Science University of Mysore, Mysore Email - khaiser.nikam6@gmail.com (M) 9845328672 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Dear Dr. Begum
It's a nice question and some where it also fall under Arts. These
variations are clear indication that LIS profession is loosing it's
Identity. Library professionals employment condition is similar wether they
are teaching or non teaching?
Neither our top leaders nor associations take up the matter and place
themselves in appropriate place in the universe of knowledge.
I have doubt about the existence of this profession itself as per current
Indian scenerio?

Well, better late than never, today our LIS professionals are posing a basic question ‘who are we?’ After so many years and after all the damage being done so far. History tells us that Dr SRR has called it a science but it was not recognised for many years and continued to be patronised mainly by the arts and social science departments in our universities. Even though some departments came under school of sciences it was not universal. In some universities it was treated on par with journalism and communication disciplines. Whatever may be the reason the fact is that LIS courses are professional add-on courses with practical training better imparted under the School of Social Sciences but not any other school. We should remember that earlier BLSc / MLSc courses were offered by universities only. Unfortunately, today they are being offered by degree colleges and library ‘centres’ without proper faculty and laboratories. In my opinion LIS discipline should come under school of Social sciences. I hope our profession finds its proper place among the universe of knowledge and our Professional Associations do their bit of lobbying to set right this anomaly; otherwise tomorrow somebody may raise the question ‘is library science a discipline?’ Dr M Koteswara Rao Former librarian Univ of Hyderabad Sent from my iPhone
