By opening up data, one doesn't just make it available for free, but also makes sure that it is re-usable and re-distributable. The government collects a vast quantity of high-quality data as part of its daily working activities. If this data is made open, it has huge potential benefits. Open Government Data (OGD) hence is still a largely untapped resource. It can help achieve transparency and democratic control, enable civil participation, have new and enhanced products and services, and finally encourage innovation and governmental efficiency. Opening government data in the developed and in some of the developing countries has already led to a socio-economic growth and it definitely holds a bright future ahead in terms of new insights and innovation. This seminar introduces the basic concepts of Open data and Open Government Data, explains the current conditions of OGD repositories around the world, principles of Open Government Data, challenges of publishing open government data, dealing with those challenges and finally concludes with the benefits of Open Government data.
