(Sunil MV)T\ the following is fro the query "National Library week" *Why are we celebrating national library week?* In the the year 1918 the campaigning of library movement got its momentum and by this time it had already four to five years of its history. The stalwarts in the library movement like Ayyanki Venkata Ramanayya and Suri Venkata Narasimha Sastry were touring all over the state of Andhra Pradesh and enlightening people for establishing libraries and while so, they were happy to know that the ministry of science ,government of India were going to organize a public library conference at Lahore. The leaders of library movement very much wanted to participate in the conference and get further motivated but the British government denied permission for them since they felt that these leaders from the public would be undeserving and only representatives of the government were. The leaders in the library field felt humiliated at this incident since they were of the view that any conference without participation from the public was of no use and hence they wanted to show their strength of library movement to British rulers. Thereafter , the leaders contacted all the elders from different states across the country working in the field of public libraries and as a result under the able guidance of Sri Ayyanki Venkata Ramanayya for the first time a wonderful National library conference was conducted for two days from 14th to 15th Nov 1919 at Gokhale hall,Madras now Chennai. This conference in which a large number of representatives of library field from all the states participated was presided over by the then director of libraries, sri Kudalkar from Baroda province. There was tremendous response for the conference that it even beat the conference conducted by British government and not stopping at this a huge public rally was followed there by making the British rulers know what the people of Andhra Pradesh were in the field of libraries. In the seventh decade of nineteenth century i.e.,1960 ,sri Chakravarthy who was working as librarian in the ministry of finance , government of India ,Delhi used to have great affection for people of Andhra Pradesh who were instrumental in shaping the library movement and hence he too used to render his yeoman service for the same. The Indian library association submitted a memorandum to declare 14th Nov as National library day since it was a significant day on which the first signal of development of library movement on national level came into lime light and also to celebrate library week till 20th and it was duly forwarded to government of India. The government accepted the memorandum as it was and permission was granted to celebrate library week in all the libraries across the country from the year 1968. The activities laid down by the leaders of library movement for library week celebrations include : decorating the libraries in a beautiful manner, acquiring new furniture ,educating villagers about the existence of libraries ,facilities extended, book wealth in reach ,campaigning for new membership of readers, collection of valuable and rare books ,conduct of competitions in the fields of education, general knowledge and science for students, ladies ,boys and girls around, organizing cultural programs etc. Thus ,it is a matter of pride for the people of Andhra Pradesh that they have owned a reputation for the evolution of a new concept ânational library week celebrationsâ . *Thanks & RegardsDr Raavi Sarada* *General Secretary* *Andhra Pradesh Library Association* *Sri Sarvottama Bhavan* *Vijayawada 520010* *Phone: *91 9393477313, *91 866 2472313,* On Tue, Oct 31, 2017 at 9:37 PM, <lis-forum-request@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in> wrote:

Dear All,
India celebrates National Library Week during November 14 to 20 every year. This year?s celebration is fast approaching.
As we understand the National Library Week (NLW) is celebrated starts on Children?s day, it happens to be the birthday of India?s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and continue for a week. I am curious to know when did (in which year) this NLW started? Are there any other reasons behind NLW?
I think, it is a good idea fellow librarians/libraries can share the activities they carry out in their libraries during this weeklong celebration, it will certainly help many.
Please send your reply to LIS Forum for the benefit of all.
Regards,
Sunil
