Dear Members, In the last couple of days, there have been many Diwali greeting messages being posted on this forum. While it is very nice and thoughtful of members to wish the fellow members during the festive seasons, I would like to bring to your kind attention the repercussion these messages can have on the network bandwidth, if they were to be approved for circulation. As of today (Monday 19 Oct 2009) there are 4980 registered members on LIS-Forum. In the last of couple of days, close to 30 greeting messages have been received. if These messages were to be approved then the mail servers at NCSI and IISc will have have to send out close to 1.5 lac emails! This can have adverse effect on the network traffic. As it is members would have noticed that there is considerable amount of delay in the delivery of LIS-Forum mails. Apart from LIS-Forum, NCSI mail server is also handling few other mailing lists. The traffic on the other lists handled at NCSI are also quite high. The combined traffic of all the mailing lists from NCSI is very high and I wouldn't be surprised if NCSI will be reprimanded for high volume of email traffic it has been generating. Also, the NCSI mail server itself might get choked for the sheer volume of mails that it needs to handle on a day-to-day basis. I therefore request all the members to use the mailing list judiciously and avoid greeting messages and other lengthy forwarded messages. On behalf of all the members who have sent their good wishes for Diwali and my personal self, I Wish all the members A Very Happy, safe, and Prosperous Diwali. Thanks for your cooperation. With best wishes. - Moderator NCSI, IISc
