Professional Advancement and Continuing Education (PACE) Programmes for L I S Professionals 2006-2007 The Course Outlines for PACE Programmes 2006-2007 Library and Information Science professionals having a degree in Library and Information Science and knowledge of working on computers can participate in the following training programmes. 1. Workshop on Retro-Conversion : Software Support for Libraries These workshops will train working library professionals in creating catalogues in Machine Readable Form using MARC 21 format. Each participant will be provided free of charge a software copy of DelWindows stand-alone package so that the participants when they return are able to start creating standard catalogue records in machine readable format. MARC 21 MARC 21 format is a standard used worldwide for creating the bibliographic records in libraries. DelWindows Retro-conversion and Cataloguing Software developed by DELNET (A New Way of Looking at Library Automation) DelWindows is a menu-driven software with Graphical User Interface (GUI). It is a user-friendly tool for the management of libraries. DelWindows has been designed to computerise the catalogue of any library. DelWindows has been developed and designed in such a way that anyone can operate it very easily with minimal computer knowledge. It is an efficient tool for creating and retrieving bibliographic databases and catalogues under the standard MARC 21 format. It has an effective administration and security system and provides the password for both the System Administrator as well as for the user. This system has major aspects of Data Export and Data Import utilities between various databases. One of the purposes of this workshop is to enable the participant to computerise the library through user-friendly free Library Management DelWindows Software. The workshop will provide practical training on Del-Windows and MARC 21. DELWINDOWS Software: Free of charge to every participant. Workshop on Digital Libraries : Application of Dspace DELNET is starting a series of training programmes on DSpace during 2006-07 This is an Open Source Software but the software demands extensive training to be given to each member of staff to master its application. Many institutions and organisations around the world have begun to use DSpace for developing digital libraries. DSpace (http://www.dspace.org) is one of the most popular softwares developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. LDL: Librarians' Digital Library, is the outcome of successful launching of a Digital Library using the DSpace by DRTC ( https://drtc.isibang.ac.in). These workshops are exclusively designed by DELNET to provide hands-on-experience to Library and Information Science Professionals in developing a digital library using DSpace software. Each workshop covers the overview of Dspace, Installation of Dspace, Dspace Administration, Dspace Customisation and the Linux Installation. The workshop also covers Metadata, Dublin Core and planning of digital libraries. A special lab has been developed by DELNET for conducting these workshops which comprise lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice. Communication Technologies Duration : 3 days A maximum of 50 participants will be accommodated in each individual workshop.
