PES INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (PESIT) TEQIP-II Sponsored One Day National Symposium on “Libraries: Managing Transition” Organized in association with KARNATAKA STATE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (KALA) On Thursday, 22nd August 2013 (9.00 AM to 5.00 PM) Venue: Techpark Seminar Hall, PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore –560085 What is this symposium about? There are indications that higher education institutions are entering a period of flux. A trend in recent years has been the rise of online instruction and degree programmes. Even in mainstream colleges offering on-campus programmes there is a certain amount of skepticism among managers of higher education institutions on the ‘return on investment’ in a college library. College libraries must prove the value they provide to the academic enterprise: “unless we give our funding bodies better and more compelling reasons to support libraries, they will be forced by economic reality to stop doing so”; not a very happy situation to be in! However, there is also a bright spot as the BBC programme in 2012 entitled, “The Library Returns” suggested. College librarians must be able to convert the general feelings of goodwill towards the library to effective communication to all stakeholders that clearly articulate the value and utility of the library to the academic community. How do we innovate and re-design library services and continue to be relevant in the emerging situation? This workshop is intended to answer this question. A few librarians will share their experiences and demonstrate what they have done to reinvent their own libraries. The focus will be on acquiring, enabling access & effective utilization of e-resources, new services / activities that are implementable with no additional resources. Who should attend? We welcome all librarians, especially librarians from professional colleges, to attend the workshop. There will be one open session to allow all those who have introduced innovative practices to share and showcase their experiences. Resource Persons Since our idea is to make the participants hear from the ‘horse’s mouth’, the resource persons will be librarians who have done something different in their own institutions; they will tell the participants and also demonstrate what they have done and how their library users reacted to these. Certificates: Attendance and participation certificates would be issued to all the registered participants Registration: There is no registration fee for attending and participating in the symposium. However, all those desirous of participating in the Workshop must register online. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDZIQ3BDdU9UQVhSMU1USGR... or www.library.pes.edu For further enquires please contact: Mr. Subhash Reddy B Organizing Secretary and Librarian I/C Library & Learning Resource Center PES Institute of Technology (PESIT) 100 Ft.
