*XXVII IATLIS * *NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2010* 17-19 November 2010 ON THE THEME *Emerging Challenges and Lingering Issues in LIS Education, Research and Training*** *Invitation and call* *for papers* Organised by Department of Library and Information Science & Jayakar Library The University of Pune Pune, 411 007 Maharashtra www.lib.unipune.ac.in *IATLIS:* Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) (founded 1969) is a professional association of about 600 teachers and professionals in Library and Information Science in India. Since its inception in 1969, IATLIS has been active in taking up several issues of LIS Education in India especially relating to the development of curriculum, teaching methods, infrastructure, teachers training etc. It actively works for the promotion of the professional interests of LIS teachers. As part of its activities, it conducts national seminars, workshops, training programmes, etc. It brings out its official organ ‘IATLIS Communication’ besides publishing pre-conference volumes. This year the annual IATLIS conference is going to be held at the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Pune, Pune – 411 007, Maharashtra from17-19 November 2010. The theme of the conference is “*Emerging Challenges and Lingering Issues in LIS Education, Research and Training*”. *About Pune:* Pune, rightly called* “Queen of the **Deccan**”, *is located at an altitude of 646m from the sea level and is 192 kms from Mumbai, surrounded on all sides by mountains from the Sahayadri range (Western Ghats). This city has been settled on the confluence of two rivers called Mutha and Mula, Pune. Pune is a historical city with great traditions. For almost a century, the Pune city served as ‘*de facto’* capital of the Maratha Empire which dominates much of the history of India during the 19th century. * * *About the **University** of **Pune* – *The Host* The University of Pune, the leading university in India was established in 1949. It has been instrumental in the rapid spread of education in rural areas and among the weaker sections of the society. The presence of the institutions of national importance including the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing ( C-DAC), Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics ( IUCAA), Education Media Research Centre (EMRC), Bioinformatics Centre and UGC Regional Centre has been made this campus a place of vigorous academic pursuits and intense intellectual activities. The University of Pune has been awarded a Five Star by NAAC and under Potential for Excellence Scheme of the UGC; University of Pune made excellent progress. *Department of Library and Information Science:* The Development of Library and Information Science was established in 1958 with a one – year Diploma course in Library Science. Since 2002 the Department is conducting two years Integrated MLISc course with Semester and Credit System. It has also introduced a number of optional papers. The Department has started regular and vacational M.Phil. programmes in 2006 and 2008 respectively. So far more than 50 research scholars have been awarded Ph.D degree. The Department is regularly organizing workshops, seminars, training programmes and other academics and professional programmes at State, Regional and National levels to meet the demands of the professionals of the region in particular. *Jayakar Library: * The University Library named after Dr. Mukund Ramrao Jayakar, the first Vice-Chancellor of Pune University started in 1950 with the books donated by Dr. Jayakar himself. Located in a spacious building with (90000 sq.ft. area) a huge reading hall is very close to the main building of the university. The Jayakar library is rich in its collection and services. It has a collection of over 500,000 volumes covering all types reading materials. The rare books and manuscripts collection in the library is an invaluable assets for the scholars. The library receives 210 print and more than 10,000 online journals. It has strong collection of audio-visual materials. The library has developed digital library which cover manuscripts, rare books and letter of prominent leaders of India. It is the first university library to implement RFID technology in India. ** *Theme of the Conference:* *Emerging Challenges and Lingering Issues in LIS Education, Research and Training (LISERT)* * * *Sub Themes:* The theme covers many lingering issues and challenges in LIS Education, research and training (LISERT), but a few sub themes are listed below: - Role and status of LISERT, particularly in the less developed countries - LIS Education – Holistic approach: mandate, manpower planning, levels, accreditation, technological determinism, infrastructure, internship, faculty and students, learning resources - Learning styles and teaching methodologies - Open and Distance Learning - Privatization and commercialization in LIS education - Critical appraisal of LIS research - Training issues and concerns for LIS - Globalization in LISERT with special reference to developing countries - Impact of ICTs on LISERT - Cooperation, collaboration partnership in LISERT *Call for Papers:* Papers are invited on the theme “*Emerging Challenges and Lingering Issues in LIS Education, Research and Training” *and its sub-themes listed above, but not limited to the above mentioned facets only. These facets are indicative only; papers addressing any other aspect of the theme are also welcome. The paper should not be more than three thousand words. Temperature during winter (November/December) varies from 15°C to 22°C.
