TISS-SDC Workshop on Open Source Software.

Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai has organised a five day workshop on "Design and Development of Digital Libraries Using Open Source Software" in association with SAARC Documentation Centre, New Delhi from 14-18 December, 2009 at TISS Main Campus. Workshop Content: During the workshop participants will learn how to: create State-of-Art digital libraries using the Open Source Software, which include software installation, configuration, customization, digitization and other related workflow operations, content development and management, designing and creating standard metadata sets to describe digital objects and encoding it in standard markup formats. At the end of the training, participants will be able to create electronic publications with search and full text retrieval facility, and launch digital libraries/archives of full text, image, audio and video files accessible over the web. Objectives: 1. Today every organization needs to develop its own Digital Institutional Repository. The LIS professionals need training to develop these repositories. This workshop is organized to make them competent in using the software. 2. To familiarize participants with the concepts of digital library and usage of Open Source Software. 3. To offer hands on experience to develop digital libraries and use of Open Source Software like DSpace, GSDL, EPRINTS etc. 4. To offer hands on experience to install Linux OS and configuration, customization, backup/restore of Open Source Software. 5. To encourage the participants in developing their own Institutional Digital Libraries. Areas Covered: • Digital Libraries-current trends and status • Overview of IR, DL, Indian Initiatives • Installation of Fedora Core OS & RDBMS • Case studies and Scope of DSpace, GSDL, etc. • Customization, submission workflow, User customization etc . • Various Security Levels to effect restricted access • DSpace Administration, workflow • Dublin Core, and open standards • OAI-PMH • Handles persistent identifiers to each digital object in the repository • Unicode and Indian Languages Target Audience: Five day workshop is going to be attended by librarians from SAARC countries as well as local participants from various parts of the India. The workshop will be of immense benefit to all those involved in developing and maintaining digital libraries . The workshop is confined to limited number of 30 participants only. (15 participants from SAARC countries and 15 from India) Pedagogy: The workshop will be conducted at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai which is equipped with world class lecture rooms and Cyber Library with 6 Mbps Internet connectivity. Each participant will be provided a PC for practicals. The workshop comprises of lectures, demonstration and practice on the topics mentioned above. Cyber Library facilities are made available for practice to the participants during extended hours. The course material and application software will be distributed to the participants on CDs to enable them to install, work and make use of these software in their respective organisations. Workshop Faculty: The resource persons for the workshop, having wide experience on the topics, will be drawn from NISCAIR, UGC-INFLIBNET, IITs, DRTC , IIMs, along with experienced faculty from the TISS. Accommodation: Accommodation will be arranged for all the participants in the campus Guest House and/or in the nearby Hotels. Registration: Registration and Boarding and Lodging for the five day workshop is FREE for the selected participants. Registration is on First Come First Serve Basis.
