INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research and Training Centre 8TH Mile, Mysore Road Bangalore 560059 Seminar on Next-Generation Library Catalogues Abstract: People's expectations regarding search and access to information have dramatically changed with the advent of the Internet. Even though people know the information available from libraries is free and authoritative they often use libraries as a last resort. There could be several reasons for this. A major factor could be the gap between them and users expectations. There appears to be widespread dissatisfaction with many of the online catalogs. Although these catalogs provide a rich set of functionality, they have not necessarily followed the broader conventions established in the context of the Web. The proposed paradigm shift to next generation library catalogues is intended to address some of the issues related to this by taking into account the changing nature of user expectations and the available technology. This seminar will examine the underlying concepts, technologies, and user expectations and briefly review some of the current developments and emerging products. Student Presenter : Ali Raza Venue : DRTC Class Room Date : 18th November 2009 Time : 2:00 pm. All are cordially invited.
