The UNESCO establishes 23 April a red letter day for the significance it holds for world literature. It was the day in year 1616 when Cervantes and Shakespeare left for their heavenly abode, though the fact is not unanimously accepted among the scholars. Strangely the day happens to be associated with life (and death) of many renowned littérateurs such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, JosepPla and Manuel MejíaVallej. Celebrating the Day, UNESCO aims to promote, support, joys of reading, publishing, acknowledging and protecting the contributions of authors through adherence to copyright laws by one and all. In consonance with the same spirit, the Central Library, JNU in collaboration with INFLIBNET and M/S Balani InfoTech will organize a daylong workshop for the research scholars of the university. It is hoped that the national seminar will provide a forum to the experts and researchers to deliberate upon the issues related to plagiarism and copyright laws. The proceedings of the Day commensurate with the mission of Central Library, which promotes scholarly communication as per the norms and ethics of the academic world. It is well accepted that honesty is the basic policy of academic or scientific writing. Unfortunately, the widely rampant lapse is plagiarism which occurs intentionally or unintentionally. As the issue of plagiarism is assuming greater concern, universities worldwide, are taking concerted efforts to deter, prevent and discipline plagiarism. The scholars or researchers in academic world are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity and avoid all forms of writing which can be considered as plagiarism. Plagiarism has been defined as taking someone else’s words, ideas and passing them off as one’s own. It is an act of using the language and thoughts of others without acknowledging them. It tantamount to misappropriation, infringement, piracy, counterfeiting or academic theft or fraud. There are ten most common types of plagiarism , as mentioned on the website ofplagiarism.org,which are listed as follows: clone: Submitting another’s work, word-for-word, as one’s own; CTRL-C has significant portions of text from a single source without alterations ; Find – replace -changes key words and phrases but retains the essential content of the source; Remix - Paraphrases from multiple sources, made to fit together; Recycle borrows generously from the writer’s previous work without citation; Hybrid Combines perfectly cited sources with copied passages without citation; Mash up - mixes copied material from multiple sources; 404 error- includes citations to non-existent or inaccurate information about sources; Aggregator includes proper citation to sources but the paper contains almost no original work; Re-tweet Includes proper citation, but relies too closely on the text’s original wording and/or structure. Spotlighting the causes at times the (pseudo) researchers may lack complete understanding of the subject as a result may be hesitant to undertake original research writing. The researchers may be unaware of the importance of academic honesty and publishing ethics. They may be ignorant of the consequences which may befall them when they get caught. At times, the researchers may be tempted to take short cuts and end up plagiarising. They may lack the ability to express their views in their own language. They may lack the ability to quote, paraphrase and summarize the sources. The researchers may not be proficient in assimilating and integrating the views of other scholars in their own writings. They may be unaware of the immense relevance of the references and citations and how to list them, which they have consulted and used. Citations and references are the notations in the text of a paper which identify the source of the authors’ claims, other research and theories mentioned in the paper. References serve as a pivotal link in the scholarly communication which enable the readers to investigate in more depth the details of a given thought or idea. Self-plagiarism is considered equally unacceptable in academic world. It is copying material which one has previously contributed and published and projecting it as new contribution and getting it published. It is an act of literary theft and is prolific in the scholarly world. Self-plagiarism is considered unethical because the journal space is exceptionally limited, where researchers compete with one another to get published after passing through rigorous process of peer review. The editors and referees have to spend considerable time in screening and evaluating the authors’ manuscripts. If the same manuscript is submitted twice it leads to duplication of content, efforts and dissipation of energy. Objectives The workshop is unique, first-of-its-kind in India, which aims to be a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing on issue of plagiarism which is highly relevant to all the stakeholders of scholarly communication. The workshop will have eminent experts from industry, academia, law as resource persons, library professionals who have been early adopters of tools and technologies which are used to detect and prevent plagiarism. This workshop would be a rare opportunity for researchers, students, and Library& Information Science Professionals to gain knowledge of various facets of plagiarism. The day-long seminar will inform and educate the researchers about the importance of academic honesty, plagiarism and its repercussions across the scholarly communication. It will sensitize the researchers towards the consequences which may befall due to intentional or unintentional plagiarism or self plagiarism. It will educate the researchers about how copyright laws and plagiarism rules apply to using material from the Internet. It will also educate the researchers about the relevance of providing accurate citations and references in the scholarly communication. It is hoped that the day-long seminar will increase the researchers’ understanding and adherence to copyright laws and other measures to protect intellectual copyrights.
