Dear friends, UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme discussed in Oslo 11-08-2005 (UNESCO) The Memory of the World Programme will be the theme of the "UNESCO Open Forum" at the World Library and Information Congress that the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) organizes from 14 to 18 August in Norway’s capital Oslo. The UNESCO Open Forum on Memory of the World on 14 August will include presentations on regional activities of the Memory of the World Programme focusing on: Timbuktu Manuscripts, Slave Trade Archives project, Memory of the World in Asia and the Pacific, and UNESCO/Jikji Prize. The session will be chaired by Bendik Rugaas, former Minister, former Norwegian national librarian, Norwegian Cultural Attaché in the USA and former Chair of the Memory of the World Programme International Advisory Committee There will be in Oslo a 7-speaker panel presentation followed by a discussion. Speakers at the session will include: Jasmine Cameron, Deputy Director of the National Library of Australia, Celia Zaher, Director of the National Library of Brazil, Alida Boye, University of Oslo, Ekaterina Genieva, Director M.I. Rudomino All-Russia State, Library for Foreign Literature, Moscow, Adolf Knoll, Deputy Director of the Czech National Library, Deanna Marcum, Associate Librarian of Congress and Chair of the Memory of the World Programme International Advisory Committee, and Aziz Abid, UNESCO Memory of the World Programme Officer. IFLA, which maintains official relations with UNESCO for many years, is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users.
