Dear Members, On behalf of Jain University, Bangalore, I cordially invites you for the Special Lecture on “Information sources in social sciences in a digital library environment: obstacles and opportunities” Speaker: Dr .M.Krishnamurthy Faculty, DRTC Indian Statistical Institute Bangalore -560059 Date: Friday 20th Sept, 2013 Time: 2.pm Venue: Ground Floor Seminar Hall-2 , Jain University, Jayanagar 9th Block, Bangalore- 69 Abstract: The information source infrastructure in social sciences needs to be strengthened. It is essential for social sciences in developing countries to pay much greater attention to the parochial nature of its knowledge and the need for indigenization. In a situation of digital resources are becoming more visible in the social science, use of these resources by scholars remains limited. Social Science disciplines have come to rely on computers and electronic communication for some of their daily work, but the use of digital information resources has yet to become routine. Digital libraries are still evolving, and librarians and other information professionals are just beginning to understand and exploit the computer’s ability to assist in the Social Science research process. Research on prerequisites for development of digital libraries by exploring user needs, capabilities and preferences as well as obstacles they encounter while using existing electronic inform! ation resources in a pre-digital environment. Social scientists study all aspects of society—from past events and achievements to human behavior and relationships among groups. Therefore, it is part of the social science institutions and associations make a strategy that the social science educational system be so arranged that researchers and students become accustomed to regarding Internet as a tool to be used in the learning process. About Speaker: Dr. M. Krishnamurthy is Faculty at Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute, Prior to taking this assignment he served as librarian of Indian statistical Institute Bangalore centre, and University Librarian, University of Mysore. He has 18 years experience as Librarian. He is recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship in 2006 and visited Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Illinois (USA), and also he is recipient of the Open Repository Scholarship to attend Sydney, Australia conference in 2007. He has contributed extensively to national and international journals and conferences (80 articles). He received Bharath Shiksha Ratana Award in 2102, and ILA CD Sharma Best paper award in 2013..His research interests are in the uses of emerging information and communications technologies (ICTs) to enhance libraries and education. His research and teaching are in! the areas of Social Networking, Digital Archives, Digital Libraries, and Educational Technology. At present he is treasurer for the Association of British Scholars, Bangalore. He visited USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, Scotland for academic assignment. Regards, Meeramani.
