Sad news of the passing of Mr. Eric J. Coates
---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- From: "K.S. Raghavan" <ksragav@hotmail.com> Date: Tue, December 12, 2017 9:56 pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear LIS Professionals: It is with a deep sense of sorrow that I report the news of the passing of Mr. Eric J. Coates, a founder member of the Classification Research Group (UK) and a close associate of Late Prof. S. R. Ranganathan. Mr. Coates passed away on 5th December at the ripe age of 101. His book, Subject Catalogues: Headings and Structure, first published in 1960 by the Library Association, is a classic and probably carries the most detailed exposition of Dr. Ranganathans chain procedure and other subject heading practices and procedures. The book is still widely used as a textbook in LIS schools around the world. Mr. Coates along with a few other members of CRG participated in the International Conference on Ranganathans Philosophy and the FID / CR regional conference held in Delhi in 1985. K. S. Raghavan .
May his soul rest in peace. Also a nice feeling that a veteran of the classic era of Library Science was a centenariaran, like our Prof. Parthasarathi is. N. V. Sathyanarayana On Wednesday, 13 December 2017, <mailman@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in> wrote:
