INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research & Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE Post Bangalore, 560 059 DRTC Colloquium 2 (2009 2011) Search Engines: Impact on libraries This age is well called as an information age. The human being on the planet earth is surrounded with information, but the problem is, the more information there is the more it is to find the most relevant one. It is just the same as to find a needle in a hay stack. It may be said a hundred times that this is an information age, but it won't be of much help, if the information seeker is not able to find his or her needed information well in time. It may happen that the information-seeker is seeking for information and such information is possibly in existence, but he or she finds it when there is no further need of it, or the objective to find it is no more in force. So not only it is important that we have a lot of information but it is more important that we find it in right time and right place. Information age is not only about the abundance of information, but the fastest retrieval of the relevant information. In this colloquium we will be describing the search engine and how it works with respect to web-crawling, indexing and searching. We would also throw some light on the impact that search engines and WWW have made on the conventional library and library systems. Contents Speakers 1. Introduction Sarangi, Amit Kumar. 2.
