The International School of Information Management University of Mysore As part of its 5th Anniversary celebrations has organized a special lecture on Computing for Socio-Economic Development at Microsoft Research India By Dr. Edward Cutrell Researcher Manager, Technology for Emerging Markets Group Microsoft Research India, Bangalore Date: September 15, 2010 | Time: 3:30 PM Venue: International School of Information Management, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore 570006 Speaker Bio: Dr. Edward Cutrell, is the Research Manager of the "Technology for Emerging Markets Group" at Microsoft Research India, Bangalore, He is a cognitive psychologist with a background in cognitive neuroscience and has been working in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) for more than a decade. Ed's research concerns the exploration and measurement of human interactions with information technology. Over the years, he has worked on a broad range of HCI topics, including input technologies, visual perception and graphics, intelligent notifications and disruptions, and interfaces for search and personal information management. His current research focuses on Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD). In this work, he seeks to understand how people in the world's poor communities interact with information technologies and explores new ways for technology to meet their needs and support their socio-economic development. The Technology for Emerging Markets (TEM) group at Microsoft Research (MSR) India addresses the needs and aspirations of people in the world's developing communities. Their research targets people who are increasingly consuming computing technologies and services, as well as those for whom access to computing remains largely out of reach. TEM is a multidisciplinary group engaged in a range of technical and social-science research, working in the areas of ethnography, sociology, political science, economics, and psychology. This has enabled TEM to understand the social context of technology and how it relates to individual users. TEM also does technical research in hardware and software to devise solutions that are designed for emerging and underserved markets in rural and urban environments. In this lecture, Dr. Cutrell will give an overview of the TEM group and highlights two projects his team has been involved with one, which is a study seeking to understand how information technologies are used by very low income residents of urban slums, and another, which attempts to provide Wikipedia and other digital content offline using DVDs --- Shalini Dr. Shalini Urs Executive Director and Professor International School of Information Management University of Mysore Mysore - 570006 Phone : + 91 821 2514699 Fax : + 91 821 2519209 www.isim.ac.in ISiM - Management School of IT.
