Dear All,
I prefer to differ with Dr K S Raghavan quoting Professor Neelameghan
about Dr Ranganathan's discouragement of observation of his birthday
celebration .
I may recall that When Sri A C Deve Gowda was the president of Mysore
Library Association (now KSLA) in early 1970s (Sri Vikunta Baliga was the
speaker of Mysore Legislative Assembly ) there was a move to celebrate the
National Library Week coinciding with the birthday of Ranganathan.
Ranganathan was very much alive that time.
However, the Calcutta group more importantly (it was rumored) the then
heads of National Library and INSDOC succeeded in deciding November 2nd
week as National Library week.
The Hyderabad based Academy of Library Science and Documentation
(ALSD) started
Librarians Day celebration in late 1970s and others followed the suit till
today. Professor Neelameghan was very much aware of it.
Best regards,

Dear Members, Please refer my posting on the above subject matter dated 25
Aug 2016. The archived copy of that message can be accessed at
http://ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/pipermail/lis-forum/2016-August/020020.html
As reported in my communication, many of us who have registered with
LIS-Forum with personal IDs, were having issues in receiving mails from
LIS-Forum. Since about a week or so, I have stated receiving lis-forum
mails on my personal Gmail ID. I have cross-checked with few other members,
and they, too, have confirmed that they are now receiving lis-forums on the
their personal IDs.
I am forwarding an important posting dated 11 August 2016 by Dr. K.S.
Raghavan clarifying Dr. Ranganathan's birthday. This post was circulated on
lis-forum on the 11th August, but during that period, there were some
issues in the relaying of lis-forum mails to personal IDs, it is,
therefore, being circulated again.
Best, Francis

In the last few days I have seen quite a few postings on LIS Forum and
other channels on the subject of Dr. Ranganathan's birthday. Dr.
Ranganathan's actual date of birth is 9th August; In the official records
his date of birth is shown as 12th August. At the Sarada Ranganathan
Endowment for Library Science the practice was to observe the birthday on
any day between 9th and 12th August. However, 12th August has been
officially declared as Librarians' day.
Prof. Neelameghan had once told me that Dr. Ranganathan did not approve of
any function / celebrations even on his birthday. But mortals that we are,
we need something to ring the bell and wake us up from slumber and I
believe that the celebrations are purely for that purpose. Let us remember
that library / information service is a support service so that some one
who is our customer is able to carry out his task in a more effective and
efficient manner. Let us not forget what Dr. Ranganathan preached and
practised. It certainly should not be that we celebrate his birthday and
forget his ideals the next day ! Let us put an end to this debate and focus
on what needs to be done.
Wishing all LIS Professionals a happy Librarians' Day.
