M. Narayanan Department of Electrical Engineering Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802 USA On Saturday, 12th Dec 2015 at 4.00 p.m. At Seminar Hall, Dept. of Biotechnology, IIT Madras, Chennai – 600036 Cmdr. Mohan Menon, President, IITMAA, Chennai Mr. H.R. Mohan, Chairman, IEEE CS & PCS Madras Mr. K. Bhaskaran, Chairman, CSI Chennai Programme ========= 4.00 p.m.: Tea & Fellowship 4.30 p.m.: Presentation About the Presentation ================= The number of foreign students applying for graduate study in the United States and Canada has increased substantially in recent years, driven by the ready availability of school information from the web as well as family and friends. However, the intake of graduate students has not kept up with the rise in the number of applicants. The percentage of applicants offered admission is low (about 10-15%), while the percentage of applicants offered financial assistance prior to entry is even lower (about 5% or less). The speaker has reviewed hundreds of applications over the past 20-25 years and has seen a wide range in the quality of the applications, which is generally not correlated with the quality of the applicants. There have been several occasions when high-quality applicants have been denied admission solely based upon very weak application portfolios, mainly the statement of purpose (SOP) and reference letters. This presentation aims to be a "how to" guide to strengthen your application thereby enhancing your chances of getting admission and financial aid. While the focus will be on engineering studies, several of the guidelines should be applicable to other fields as well, especially science and mathematics. About the speaker ============= Ram. M. Narayanan received his B.Tech from lIT Madras, Chennai in 1976 and his Ph.D. from University of Massachusetts in 1988. He was a Design Engineer in BEL Ghaziabad (1976-83) and a faculty member at University of Nebraska (1988-2003). He is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. His interests are UWB radar systems and applications, radar networking, microwave tomography, and RF tags. He is a Fellow of IETE, IEEE, and SPIE. Registration ========= Seats are limited.
