*A Seminar on* *"Open Data in Education & Research"* Saturday, April 19th, 2014 Venue - INSA, New Delhi Convenor/s : Dr. Usha Mujoo Munshi (IIPA) Ms. Neeta Verma (NIC) *Background* ICSU-CODATA along with World Data System(WDS) is organizing the next General Assembly and International Conference *SciDataCon 2014, **at New Delhi at the invitation of Indian National Science Academy. The conference is scheduled during 2-5 November 2014. The deliberations of **SciDataCon 2014** will *be focused on major issues in global data management. Data plays a crucial role in fundamental as well as applied research. The remarkable rate of growth of new knowledge supported by great advances in technology, the rate of generation of new data is also unprecedented. The challenge is to organize, save and disseminate data for growth of S&T and for applications leading to societal good. There are serious policy issues like the span and extent of open access. Even in tackling issues of sustainable development multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches need a wide variety of data from diverse fields. As a prelude to the forthcoming international conference, the National Organizing Committee (NOC) is organizing a series of seminars/workshops across the country. Experts in different areas are being invited to share their views on the core issues related to data science. These meetings will deliberate on as to how this field can play an important role in strengthening quality research landscape and the scientific research productivity of the nation. *One of the pre-SciDataCon 2014 event *is being organized on the theme* "**Open Data in Education & Research"* on 19 April 2014 at INSA, New Delhi.
