INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research & Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE Post Bangalore, 560 059 COLLOQUIM - 4 (2015 2017) Library Automation: A Critical Analysis ABSTRACT Today library automation is by far the most commonly used term to describe the mechanization of library housekeeping operations, such as acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serial control, etc. using the computers. The aim is to provide an efficient and speedy access to information, reduced cost and improved control and management of library operations. In this colloquium, we will discuss the basics of library housekeeping operations, various modules and the need of automatizing the library operations. We will discuss some of the popular open source (e.g., Koha, NewGenLib, Evergreen and openBiblio) and commercial (e.g., SOUL, Voyager, Libsys, Virtua) software tools along with their comparative analysis. We will also discuss the changing dimensions of library automation and the challenges involved in implementing the automation systems.
