Colloquium Invitation on National Knowledge Commission
INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE DOCUMENTATION RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE 8th MILE MYSORE ROAD, BANGLORE-56005 DRTC COLLOQUIUM-5 (2007-2009) ON National Knowledge commission and its Recommendations ABSTRACT The ability of a nation to create, use and apply information and information technology in all development-related processes directly influences and impacts socio-economic development. Recognizing this many governments and policy- making bodies have initiated processes to formulate and implement effective national information policies and strategies. This is seen as necessary to respond to global challenges. India, as a rapidly growing economy, needs a knowledge-oriented paradigm of development to give its people advantages in all fields of knowledge. Recognizing this the Government of India constituted the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) in 2005. The NKC is expected to make recommendations that help transform India into a knowledge-based society. Its prime focus is on five key areas of the knowledge paradigm: Access to knowledge, Knowledge concepts, Knowledge-creation, Knowledge application and development of better Knowledge services. One of the central objectives of NKC is to examine the present standards and services of libraries, other information centers and resources and suggest measures for their development so that they could play a central role in this transformation. The NKC has come out with a document constituting its Report to the Nation for 2005. This Colloquium will examine the recommendations and implications with particular reference to libraries.
