Anthony Debons, a very well known scientist and pioneering of Information Scientist, professor at the University of Pittsburgh, who shaped the contours of the then emerging field of Information Science through his volume Information Science?: ?Search for identity?, in 1972 and several books later including Information Science 101; Information Science: an Integrated view; Information Science in Action: System Design ; Information Systems: Failure Analysis; The Information professional?: ?survey of an emerging field? is no more. He died on October 19, 2013 Perhaps some of my students from Mysore of the late 1970s vintage may remember him and his book?which I insisted they read if they wanted to reposition as Information Scientists. In my opinion, Tony was the father of information science setting the intellectual foundations of the field along with many others such as B.C. Brookes, Nicholas Belkin, S.E. Robertson, Dagobert Soergel, and others. I had the privilege of studying information science first hand under his tutelage at the International Graduate Summer School at Wales, organized in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, way back in 1981, where in I took a 3 credit course on " Foundations of Information Science' taught by Dr. Debons and cherish such wonderful discussions in the evenings about the evolving nature of the newly emerging field of Information Sciences from a very strong intellectual foundations perspective. Had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with him again after a long gap, when I went to University of Pittsburgh in 2005 as part of my efforts to establish the International School of Information Management (ISiM), the first and only Information School in India in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh I School. Tony was an amazing human being and fine intellect, with clarity of thought even in the ripe old age of nineties. May his soul rest in peace.
