I feel any information that is being sent is useful to some extent. It gives knowledge on various technological applications and new methods that are being used any where in the world. It helps us to know the developments. Positing such information does not mean it needs to be applied immediately in India. May be some of our libraries can think of such new and innovative procedures in future. One should keep in mind and learn the changes that are taking place in the library and information scenario. The examples I had is a US public library. In India, an academic library (Indian School of Business, H'bad) allows students to upload electronic stuff on to their iPads and pen drives. I think they also lend handheld devices, but you may check it with Dr S Venkadesan, Director of Knowledge Services at IBS.

Dear Friends, Whether we like it or not we need to accept the changes taking place due to developments in ICT and its applications to LIS. Govt of India has initiated a National Mission on Libraries and has set aside 300 crores. Dept of Public Libraries, Govt of Karnataka has sanctioed Rs. 5 crores to set DL facility in 12 Libraries at different level - District, Taluka and Village initially. Availability of number of E-books in OA channels, even from many commercial publishers, and preloaded e-book readers facilitate our libraries both academic and public libraries to buy book readers and even loan them along with preloaded e-resources. Now we can't find a maid servent without a mobile phone. Majority of students even at village own mobiles, that too smart phones. Soon we will witness many students and public carrying iPads or any other kind of e-book readers. It may not possible to bring US situation overnight. But we need to move in that direction. These days availabiliuty funds for this sort of activities is not a problem.
