Dear All, I am happy to share our experience with you on using NGL tool which is developed in India based on Indian Librarians' experience & inputs and the tool which is par with the best LMS tools available internationally (As per my understanding) !! Before 2013 we were using three different software for library automation, digital Library (IR) and newsletter designing and they are A commercial Library Automation software, GSDL, and MS Front page respectively. For a small library team which is responsible for catering to the information needs of a large number of users, it was difficult to maintain/work on three different tools/Databases and satisfy library users as they had to search multiple databases for a piece of information, which was time consuming activity. In early 2013 we phased out these different tools and have a single tool that comprises all the functions & features of the tools mentioned above and more importantly an OPAC with Web 2.0 features. Software: To overcome the above mentioned limitations it was planned to use NGL, an open source tool. The existing NGL 3.0.4 is customized based on the inputs & continuous feedback given by several academic libraries and special libraries, including our K-Centre & Information services. Innovation & Novelty: The interesting features of NGL are highlighted here in: * Acquisition Module: comes with workflow (online Approvals) - Starting from user's request through Online Form available in OPAC to arrival of book. * Circulation Module: Helps handling multi-location transactions & real-time status update. Easy to circulate resources among multiple libraries. * Serial Module: Allows indexing articles against a particular serial and generate a content page newsletter in html. Multi-location issues are catalogued in one location and control/accession number is generated & used for circulation. It's helping in work distribution among library team located in different geographical locations. * Cataloguing Module allows manually cataloguing book details and also downloading MARC21 records. It also supports OAI-PMH. * Administration: Library staff and patron's access rights are managed at various levels. * E-Resource : E-Resource feature is new addition to NGL & it has following features, o Upload any document /file format in NGL by users and Library staff. o Catalogue electronic documents available in organization's internal server folder or an intranet page or document available on internet. o Access rights management - Single/multi-user restriction, copy, download restriction & group access rights given through distribution List. * News letter designing: Catalogue details are converted as New Arrivals, Content pages newsletters in html and sent by e-mail. * NGL Touch: NGL touch feature helps in implementing user self service Kiosk- users can check-out, check-in and renew books by themselves. * Federated Search: Searches various collections within NGL and subscribed databases with API level integration/Open or Public Databases( Successfully tested Google books and open springer) * OPAC with Web 2.0 features: o Single Search for all resources: A keyword search searches Library collection, IR and expert's profile. o User self services online: Users can renew, reserve a book and cancel it online. User can request a book online for check-out, and raise request for a new book. o My Account: Through LDAP integration Windows NT ID & Password are used for secure access to My account-Manual user creation not required. User can check for their transaction history, cancel reservation, and update their profile details. o Knowledge sharing:1) submit book review comments online 2) Rate information resources listed in OPAC 3) Save, print, Tag and share bibliographic record with colleagues 4) Subscribe to RSS feed 6) Upload, catalogue and submit document . 6) Search expert profile and initiate discussion-discussion are captured & searchable. * NGL Mobile: Android based Mobile Apps helps user in browsing OPAC on their mobile & transact. Transaction related alerts are sent via sms. * NGL Social Media: NGL supports Face book and Twitter time lines can be displayed on OPAC home page. * Barcode, RFID support: NGL support barcode, RFID technology and also QR Code. Benefits of using NGL : Customized NGL helps in saving the time of users which would have been spent in searching multiple databases for a piece of information. RSS feed, system generated mails keep users informed about the recent additions, and thereby increase in use of library resources. NGL frees the library team from redundant works and helps involving themselves more value added information services. NGL helps librarians in moving into the knowledge Management area through the features available in NGL. OAI-PMH, federated search, API integration features helps in expanding the library's information resources beyond the library's owned & subscribed collection (Open Access). Standardisation of Library practice among library community in India, as tool is open source and any library can use it to stay competitive in the onslaught of omnipresent electronic resources.
