Here is an interesting document: http://wiki.phalkefactory.net/images/3/39/Syjrao.pdf It is part of ALPHA ("America's Library Promotional Heritage in Asia" ). Although the Britsh ruled India, it was America which helped us set up public libraries! Two days ago I had drawn attention to the library in Malwa set up by a Royal. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda had a personal library in the palace as well as he set up the first public library in India in 1910. This, of course, textbook material in Indian library schools. So the Royals - some of them - have made some very useful contributions.
