Dear Moderator, Please circulate this information to LIS Professionals. *Indian Statistical Institute * *Documentation** R**esearch and Training Center* * Colloquium (1) – 2012-14* Indexing Techniques: Their Usage in Search Engines for Information Retrieval *Abstract* Indexing and related techniques have been used for retrieval and searching of information from computerized and automated systems since 1958. Hans Peter L uhn is credited for the development of Key Word in Context Indexing. This wa s a technique that used small computer programs that printed strings of title words, the representation of which was made in alphabetical sequence. Luhn’s system triggered a transition from Manual to Automatic Indexing. The concept propounded by him was used by small search engines for information retrieval. Colloquium discusses the use of indexing techniques by modern day search eng ines like Yahoo and Google. Apart from these the efficiency or precision of respective techniques would also be highlighted. The present symposium also holds relevant discussions regarding usage and application of the aforementi oned softwares that procures indexed words after a textual content is provid ed as its input.
