INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research and Training Centre 8th Mile Mysore Road Bangalore – 560059 Seminar on E-LEARNING: An emerging platform of effective learning Abstract: With the increasing popularity of e- resources, a relatively modern method of learning called e-learning is being introduced. Networked information and communication and technologies in learning and teaching makes e-learning feasible. E-learning decreases the educational costs and it is more effective learning than traditional learning as it allows the fast dissemination of new techniques and processes by overcoming the challenges of geographic distributions. In addition, time efficiency plays a role, as travel is reduced. Users can conveniently access training materials from home or while on the road or anywhere they need via the Internet. Some other technical developments have helped this growth including (i) the increasing availability of broadband (ii) the decreasing cost of storage, and (iii) the ability of firms/institutions to exploit their corporate Intranet. Furthermore, (iv) the emergence of technical standards (such as the Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee and the ADL Initiative) has also facilitated this distinguishable growth. E-learning is facilitated by Information Communication Technology (ICT) and faster the computer networks. This seminar focuses on the conceptual framework of the term “E-learning” and the needs of the creation of virtual learning environment, tools and technologies, standards, challenges and future of eLearning and role of information professionals in E-learning.
