Dear Moderator, Please circulate this information among LIS Professionals. *Indian Statistical Institute* *Documentation Research and Training **Center* *Colloquium (5) – 2012-14* *Metadata: A Practice and its Services towards Digital Environment* *Abstract * * * Metadata is basically defined as data about data. It is about describing a particular resource which has distinct identity at any level of aggregation. The use of metadata record promotes resource discovery. Traditional approaches to metadata shifted from traditional to automate and subsequently towards digital library. In recent times considerations are being made for the development of a universal protocol for data exchange with different Digital Libraries. There is need for standardization of metadata. There should be broader solutions for the interoperability between every information sector. Applications need to be accessed through independent interoperability. This can be achieved by a collaborative effort of metadata harvesting. The OAI-PMH is a very recent development. It is being regarded as an important step towards information discovery in the digital library arena. This colloquium holds discussions on certain basic concepts underlying metadata design, models of metadata schema and to develop interoperability through OAI-PMH model. This colloquium provides an inside view on the functional requirements for extension of registry functions to enhance information discovery in the digital environment. *TOPICS*** *SPEAKERS*** 1 Introduction and Overview: Sumanta Bag 2 Metadata record and conceptual model : Kaustav Saha 3.
