Re: [LIS-Forum] LIS-Forum Digest, Vol 206, Issue 44
Dear Professionals.
I too agree with Mr. Anand Dodamani TISS, Mumbai on his view that during
this lockdown period
Most of the faculties are busy in preparing the course materials,
presentation to serve the students
of their institute, as a part of the institute we the library professionals
should also take part in serving
the faculty and student fraternity by providing the required information to
them.
It is my opinion that for updating the professional's knowledge till time
so many seminars, conferences have
been conducted in the country but this is not the right time to conduct
such online sessions.
Professionals should really think in this regard that they really need such
online sessions or they need to serve the
users of their respective institute, college, university etc. If this is
the situation continues the importance of seminar,
conferences, workshop are losing their value in the academic environment.
The professionals need to think about this issue.
With regards

Instead of holding Webinars exclusively for LIS professionals, I think we
(librarians) should hold such events for the benefit of our own library
users (students/ faculty/ researchers) which will not only enhance the
visibility to our work as librarians but will also give us a satisfaction
of doing something fruitful for the welfare of the society.

This mail has reference to the ongoing discussion on a large number of webinars happening in the field of LIS since the start of lockdown period.
There is no doubt that these Webinars have provided an opportunity for all us to spend our idle time at home productively either through sharing knowledge as speakers or gaining knowledge as listeners.
But there is a saying in English that 'too much of a good thing can be bad'. We know that even breathing pure oxygen at higher than the normal partial pressure will lead to oxygen poisoning.
What I want to say is that the human mind has its own limitations and it can absorb information only to certain extent and whatever we offer beyond that limit will go waste.
We have to accept the fact the increased number of Webinars in the field of LIS during this lockdown period have created a kind of confusion among the professionals with regard to their participation in them.
In contrary to this, as Dr. Vinit Kumar has rightly pointed out, most of these Webinars are optional in nature and it is left to the professionals to decide whether they want to take part in them.
As I have noticed, most of the Webinars conducted so far in the field had wonderful themes. Though I personally wanted to attend most of them, I could not do so due to clash of dates and timings between the events.
The beauty of these Webinars is that they can be made available in the form of You Tube recordings for those who missed them. We can enrich our knowledge by watching those videos during our free time.
Some of the reasons for the increased number of Webinars are:
1. Most of the librarians want to prove to their management that they are productive even during the lockdown by organising various webinars.
2. Most of the LIS professionals want to attend as many number of Webinars as possible to collect Certificates of Participation so that they use them for their promotional prospects.
If we change our mind sets and learn how to be selective in choosing the events for participation based on their quality and our requirements, then we need not worry about the increasing numbers.
Instead of holding Webinars exclusively for LIS professionals, I think we (librarians) should hold such events for the benefit of our own library users (students/ faculty/ researchers) which will not only enhance the visibility to our work as librarians but will also give us a satisfaction of doing something fruitful for the welfare of the society.
Regards,
Anand Dodamani Ph.D. TISS, Mumbai

With more than 30 years of working experience as a library professional with particular interest in knowledge sharing and selective dissemination of information, I guess I am capable of making comparative studies of domains .. homogeneous or heterogeneous, whatever they may be. Sorry to say that you are comparing an online activity with a pandemic. You are comparing a disease taking human lives with an event that is enriching the knowledge base of many in this case library professionals in a situation where physically attending academic activities is not possible. On the same lines, the term 'excess' is a relative term that varies from person to person as all of them are optional, and one has the freedom to attend depending on one's interest. Additionally, these webinars have allowed crossing the limitations of money, space and accessibility of listening to the views of senior professionals. No doubt they have provided a platform for the upcoming LIS speakers and professionals to share their experiences too. In my opinion, these webinars offer the knowledge in one or two hours that you gain by spending min 6-7 hours of logistics and other expenses when you attend physical conferences. The other benefits as you mentioned associated with physical conferences were anyway missing in the majority od national or international conferences organised in India barring few of the reputed conferences.
As a professional, we should be happy that the flow of knowledge is taking place through a medium accessible to all.

In these lockdown days, this helps the learners and speakers both to share their queries and exploring the knowledge without travel, registration and boarding costs simply sitting at home saving time and money. Of course I do agree there should be quality in our lecture so that a clear concept reaches to the learners.

Agree.. In a situation like this (lockdown and compulsory social distancing) we don't have a better option. But, why not keep the number of such webinars limited ONLY to what is actually required.?
