Dear friends
We all know the status and image of librarians in this country. The image
and reputation comes with the work and service we provide to users. It
also gets enhanced when we publicise, mix with people, lobby and show our
skills in making library a unique place in the academic institution.
Unfortunately , and in spite of having skills most of us could not build
the image which resulted in deterioration of the image. One of thr former
DPL in Andhra Pradesh was commenting that the librarians simply give books
and take back. do we need such high degree and salary for them. He further
commented that his attender can do better job than librarians? It was a
disgusting statement.
sometime we were worried that the library management goes to ICT people.
Due to several reasons and ineffective impression we created, more than
60% of univ librarians posts are vacant in the country. Most of the
academic administrators feel there is no need of librarian with such high
scale. we may feel bad to accept truth and blame on any one whether senior
or junior, but such situations are truthful of the profession.
who has to be blamed, ?LIS Educationnon maintenance of quality and lack of
good teaching?Almost distribution of degrees by few univs as they want
money?Lack updating the technologyLack of practical experienceTreating
this profession on par with a BA holder?Lack of commitment and work
Consciousness among professionals? No Capacity to work as the knowledge is
minimal?Lack of Environment support?
MANY MORE????
THERE IS A NEED FOR INTROSPECTION AND RECTIFY OUR LAPSES?
i KNOW THE Vijayawada institution selection process , and internally what
happend ( I am  not expert). Candidates who attended the interview could
not do interview well. The comment was the present Dy Librarian ( whom
they recruited by that time) is many times better than the librarian
candidates?
Just having qualification does not give the job and status. One has to
learn continuously, do hard work accept the new changes, commitment is
necessary, and we must be able to impress with service rather than mere
presence. What an expert out of six members of the selection committee can
do. It was shameful situation to expert as the candidates could not do
anything for such higher position and high salary/
I KNOW MY FRANK SITUATION MAY CREATE FLUTTERS IN MANY MINDS. THERE ARE
PLENTY NUMBER OF PROFESSIONALS, WHO MADE the profession  a great
profession. It has to emulated by one and all.Â
We all quote late Ranganathan every where, who brought the recognition to
the profession and the subject at international level. He made India as
one of the top countries in LIS. many people claim Late Ranganathan as
father of library science and quote stories of his association. But in
reality most of them used his name  and made positions and money too. Did
any one work for revision of his theories after him? Now we are forced to
shelve his concepts on attick. Â Should not we feel shame of this scene.
Before we celebrate Librarian's Day, is it not necessary to do something
to follow and accept his ideals, thoughts, commitment and work culture?
I know few cases where the senior professionals played mischief but dont
think every candidate applies is  competent and let us not blame the
senior experts.
BEFORE BLAMING ME, PLEASE REVIEW, RETHINK, CHANGE AND STRIVE TO GET PAST
GLORY WHICH NEVER COMES WITH DEGREES AND DISTINCTIONS?
GOOD LUCK TO EVERY ONEGOD BLESS THIS PROFESSIONÂ Prof. N.LAXMAN RAO,

This is pertinent question raised by Mr. Jena and it is very serious issue
for deliberation in LIS community. Since last few years, the pay scales and
designations of library professionals are downgraded by authorities in
various organisation arbitrarily. This not only the case of SPA, Vijaywada,
but also happened in many organisations like Election Commission in India,
IIT Mumbai, IIT Indore etc.
Here we are blaming to the authorities, but why not for senior LIS
professional who went in SPA Vijaywada for taking interview as an Expert.
Why they made this interview NFS? They should have pressurised the
Director, SPA for not abolishing this post. In govt. institutions creating
a post is very cumbersome job and once the post is created these Experts
never raised the voice against abolition.
Besides this there are so many important issues in LIS Profession which I
have highlighted in my latest article in entitled âIs all well in LIS
Profession in India?â published in IASLIC Bulletin Vol. 61(4), December
2016. The link of this paper is given below.
