Global Awareness Programme
Dear Professionals, This is with reference to one of my previous communications to this forum (given below) regarding resources for Global Awareness Programme (GAP) for students in Middle and Senior School. After a lot of online research, and discussions with professional friends around the world, we have come across an excellent online current affaires service called "THE DAY <http://www.theday.co.uk/> "(www.theday.co.uk <http://www.theday.co.uk/> ) linking the daily news to different parts of the school curriculum. We are using this resource for the last one year and found it very useful. This online daily news service for 11-18 year olds provide three stories a day, linking the news with the full curriculum and these stories come complete with discussion points and class activities, and are perfect for assemblies, Citizenship, formative assessments, class projects and assignments, commentaries in various subjects, general awareness programmes (GAP), extended essays and theory of knowledge topics or as topical introductions to any subject. It's popular with teachers because it helps to save them time and engage their students. "This is an international service created in the UK with a mission <http://www.theday.co.uk/info/our-mission> to raise the aspirations and abilities of students and prepare them for the wider world. Launched by a group of professional journalists formerly of The Financial Times, "The Day <http://www.theday.co.uk/> " already deliver to more than 1800 schools in the UK and in 15 other countries including international schools in India such as "The International School Bangalore" (TISB). " For a school with 500 students, it will cost less than 40 Rupees per student for an annual subscription for the whole school. Our interest is in resources which are updatable at least once in every 6 months and which primarily consist of worldwide newspaper and magazine articles on a range of themes (in a ring binder) which are added to when the supplement comes out. The themes should include topics such as global warming, medical ethics, social responsibility, international relations, poverty eradication, disease control, politics, etc. In case if any of you are using similar resources in your school kindly provide the details. Best wishes Benny M.D. HoD, Department of Library The International School Bangalore -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
