NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL LIBRARIES AND WEB TECHNOLOGIES : CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES 19.08.2010 – Pre-Conference Tutorial on Moodle 20 - 21.08.2010 - Conference Organized by Central Library Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology Coimbatore & Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science (SALIS - 2010) CONFERENCE OBJECTIVE The Conference aims at providing a national platform to all stakeholders to address, discuss and debate issues related to the Next Generation Digital Libraries and Web Technologies for the benefit of all sections of the society. Digital Library Conceptual views, models, and architecture - Virtual Library, redefining the DL, DL initiatives, case studies of planning and implementation of DL projects using DSpace, GSDL, Fedora, etc. in academic, special and public libraries - Institutional Repositories/archives - data integration and interoperability, user interface, metadata harvesting, DL standards: Dublin Core, METS, W3 - strategic partnership with the Government, professional bodies and other stake holders for implementation and promotion of DL. 2. Digital Resource/Content E-resources, policy, consortia and sharing, models, pricing, e-learning/e-publishing, content management - standards, open source resources, OAI - preservation/ archival of contents - Issues in DL: IPR, copyright and Digital Right Management (DRM). 3. Digital Library Infrastructure HW, DL software and tools, DL infrastructure (RFID, Bio- metric, Wi-Fi, Smartcard, scanning and OCR, preservation, storage technologies, networks), Standards - z39.50, SRU, NCIP, etc 4. Digital Library Management DL resource collection policy, Security policy, budgeting and cost effectiveness, resource sharing, best practices, Total Quality Management (TQM) and Knowledge Resource Management. 5. Web Technology Application/web tools for social networking/digital library service - Web 2.0/3.0, Library 2.0, Web blogs, RSS, Podcast, Mashups, Semantic web - Web based library services and portals, impact of WT in LIS, youtube, Web OPAC, Web archives, search engine, google, wikipedia, webometrics, standards and tools, information retrieval 6. Digital Library and User User behavior in digital environment, user studies, users perception about digital libraries, digital natives, information requirements of google generation, marketing the digital resources, Information Literacy to promote usage of digital resources. 7.Capacity Building Soft skill, competency, training for the next generation library professionals to meet the challenges. 8.Curriculum Curriculum for DL and Web technology, e –Learning practices for next generation, HRD, training/courses 9.Research in Digital Libraries Current and future trends in research in India and other countries WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE? SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Working papers based on research work, case studies and implementation of new and novel ideas, methods and services are invited. The papers will be reviewed by the editorial committee. Selected papers will be included in the conference proceedings and also published in SALIS journals. The decision of the editorial committee regarding the acceptance of the paper for presentation will be final. The editorial committee has right to accept or reject a paper based on the recommendation of the editorial committee. GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Authors are requested to submit the soft copy of full paper (with abstract not exceeding 200 words and at least three keywords) on CD and an e-mail attachment to the organizing secretary. Paper should not exceed 8 pages of A4 size with double line spacing and font size 12 in Times New Roman. Charts, graphs, photographs, if any, should be inserted at proper places in the paper. References should be given as per the Chicago Style. Authors are advised not to include downloaded materials and figures from the Internet. A declaration by the author(s) should be given separately stating that the paper has not been presented/ published elsewhere. Papers accepted for presentation will be intimated to the first author by e-mail. BEST PAPER AWARD Best Paper Award for LIS Professionals and Best Paper Award for LIS students will be given by SALIS for the best paper presented in the conference. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The conference programme consists of pre-conference tutorial, inaugural session, technical sessions, invited lectures, contributed papers, product presentation cum exhibitions from reputed vendors and knowledge dissemination institutions which will create more awareness among the participants on the conference themes. ACCOMMODATION The delegates will be provided accommodation in the college hostel on sharing basis against an advance payment of Rs 100/- per day on first cum first served basis. In case of non-availability of rooms in the hostels, accommodation will be arranged in hotels on request, on extra payment. Many hotels are available near the Railway station and Gandhipuram Central Bus stand and the tariff will be ranging from Rs.500/- to 5000/- for non-A/C and A/C accommodation. TRANSPORT SKCET is located near Kuniamuthur in Coimbatore - Palakad NH, 12 kms away from Coimbatore Central Bus stand and 10 kms from the Railway Station. Call taxi, auto and bus facilities are available from all parts of the city. For availing transport and accommodation facilities, the volunteers will guide the delegates from the Railway Station and Bus stand from 19th August 2010 onwards.
