Collaborating on drafting an article/ blog on performance assessment of Koha ILMS
Hi Community, Koha as an open-source ILMS application is stable and have been powering many libraries worldwide. We at SocialWell have been operating multiple Koha ILMS instances for six institutions for the last six months now. In this period, we have monitored how Koha is performing on different sizes on library, usage, and server specifications. In general, it appears Koha-using libraries can benefit a lot from performance enhancements. From a cost perspective, it seems Koha runs well in a minimum of 2vCPU, 8 GB RAM, and 16 GB memory. A server with this spec costs about Rs. 66,816 a year. That’s a significant expense for a library having 5,000 to 10,000 resources. I want to collaborate with other Koha experts to write an article or a blog on the performance pros and cons and areas of improvements. This would help us to put together more scenarios – running multiple Koha instances in a single compute machine, running each instance separately, among others. You can email me at hi@socialwell.net. Interesting discussion. I don't know which cloud service was referenced for the 66k/year for 2 vCPU, 8GB RAM server. There are much cheaper options available. I will present just two here: 1. E2E Networks: having top quality datacenters in Delhi & Mumbai, using top grade CPUs. 4 vCPUs (Intel/AMD), 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD NVMe will cost: ₹2,263 + GST / month = ₹27,156 + GST / year 2. Hetzner: having high-grade datacenters across EU. Their ARM CPUs** are very economical. 4 vCPU (Ampere Arm64), 8 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD will cost: €7.72 / month = €92.64 / year =~ ₹8,400 / year 8 vCPU (Ampere Arm64), 16 GB RAM, 160 GB SSD will cost: €14.86 / month = €178.32 / year =~ ₹16,200 / year ** Both Koha and DSpace work perfectly fine on Arm64 CPUs. Although ARM CPUs are cheaper to manufacture and run, they are not commonly available with most cloud service providers. Both public and private institutions in India ideally should be using MeitY-empaneled Cloud Service Providers, considering The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 has been passed by both the houses of legislature and it will soon be in force. Once the bill is in force, then all organizations need to use providers having their data centers in India.
List of the MeitY-empaneled Cloud Service Providers:

AWS EC2 Pricing for Hyderabad region: Instance type: t4g.large, Linux OS, vCPU: 4, Memory: 16 GB, On demand hourly rate: $0.0896 X 750 hours X Rs. 80 X 12 months = Rs. 64,512.

Though I am not sure why a single instance of Koha should require 4vCPU and 16 GB memory. We had a recent occurrence of high memory consumption, probably triggered by DDoS attack and then the instance stopped running.
We are still assessing those aspects and would share in the article.
Hope it helps.
