Friends: Mr Haravu is no more but will live long in our memories as is evident from the large number of condolence messages pouring in in this list. He was good in setting up, professionally managing, and making libraries attractive and useful to the intended audience, but that is what is expected of all of us. He did something more. For example, he joined hands with Prof. Thyaga Natarajan, his teacher at INSDOC and who did not receive proper recognition, in a great project of creating a compendium of ragas and keerthanas of Carnatic music. I am not sure if he had made it available in the public domain; if not, someone should take the initiative, talk to members of his family and bring out the compendium. I came to know him when he was a trainee at INSDOC and I was working at the Publications & Information Directorate of CSIR. My workplace and his classroom were in the same floor in our office in the Pusa campus in New Delhi. But I never once spoke to him! Long afterwards, I went to Hyderabad to cover a technology conference hosted by BHEL and I met him at the BHEL booth and we had a brief chat. Again, after a long gap, when I was visiting ICRISAT (unofficially) to collaborate with my friend Muthu Madhan, I found his address and contacted him and he invited me home. This time we had a longer conversation. I could see the sense of fulfillment when he narrated the project he had been carrying out with Prof. Natarajan. RIP. Subbiah Arunachalam
Dear Professional Friends, I am very sorry learn about the sad demise of Mr L J Haravu, one of the popular and eminent tech savvy LIS Professional. I knew him since his ICRISAT days. Apart from serving and giving leadership to Library and Information Centres of NISIET, BHEL and ICRISAT, he was responsible in developing the well known LMS, NewGenLib. When I was serving as Visiting Professor and Library Adviser at University of Mysore I had invited him to make a presentation on NewGenLib with an idea of adopting it for UoM Library system. Apart from our library staff, 10 Heads of Libraries of other institutions using different LMSs attended the marathon full day long session. He proved and convinced us that NewGenLib in no way is inferior to any other open source LMSs including Koha. But unfortunately rigid approach of concerned company didn't allow it to be adopted and grown in line with that of Koha. Else, most of the libraries, especially in India would have adopted it. Probably this would have been a biggest homage to Mr Haravu, the brain child behind NewGenLib. Let the departed soul rest in peace. I pray the lord to bless his family members the strength to bear this great loss not only to them but to LIS Community. Regards, Dr I.R.N.
