Information Literacy Week 2017
Dear all,
Libraries have an incomparable expertise and experience in developing
media and information literacy among their users, from schools to
universities, and beyond into communities. Given this, IFLA is a proud
member of the Global Alliance of Partnerships for Media and Information
Literacy (GAPMIL).
The key event of the GAPMIL year Global Media and Information Literacy
Week takes place next week, with a feature conference in Kingston,
Jamaica. I am proud to say that IFLA will be represented by both our
President, Glria Parez-Salmern and myself, as well as many members of our
community. We will be underlining the growing importance of media and
information literacy in a digital world, its contribution to development,
and therefore the ever stronger case for well-supported libraries.
Â
But the conference is just one event. At a time when there is so much
concern about information overload and fake news, it is a perfect time to
underline the importance of libraries and their work. I would like to
encourage you to share stories of what you are doing to celebrate
libraries contribution to promoting media and information literacy. On the
Global MIL Week website, you can register your own events, giving them
greater prominence: https://en.unesco.org/global-mil-week-2017
I look forward to seeing many examples of the great work that you are doing,
Kind regards,
Gerald Leitner
