Fw: Digital Conversion of Library Materials
Dear Ms Shylaja, A 30 page document titled 'From Paper to Colletion' by Dr Michael Loots etc. available at http://greenstonesupport.iimk.ac.in/Documents/FromPapertoCollection.pdf provides a broad overview of the practical processes involved in converting a collection of printed documents into an e-document collection. It is part of Greenstone documentation. The document describes the format differences of the scanned images, the range of cost of the scanners starting from a few thousands to around 50 lakhs and the sequential stages in digitization,by using even volunteers. The authors say that Fine Reader is the cheap and reasonable OCR software for digitization. The document is the fall-out of the authors experience in creation of a fully searchable Greenstone digital / cd-rom library titled 'Community Development Library' containing 1785 books of around 1.6 lakhs pages. The document is a must- read for all those who involve in digitization Best Regards, K Rajasekharan Kerala Institute of Local Administration Thrissur -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
