Concepts (language) and relations (text) provide the foundation of knowledge and thought. When we look at the world, we perceive not only a mass of colors but also objects that automatically assign categories labels. Our perception system automatically segments the world into concepts and the Categories. Language is used not for the sake of communicating the concepts and the relations, but also employed to represent, store and reason with concepts and relation. Research and development in information science have focused on concepts and terms with increasing emphasis in identification, processing, management of the relation to achieve greater effectiveness and refinement in information science techniques. This seminar presents: (i) an overview of the semantic relation used in the knowledge structure such as thesauri and Ontologies, (ii) main techniques used in the automatic extraction of the semantic relations from text, and (iii) the use of semantic relation in the information extraction, information retrieval, question-answering, and automatic text summarization.
