ALISE Discussion Forum on LIS Teaching Practices
FOR ALL THE RESPECTED FACULTIES OF LIS How do teaching practices in LIS help students develop the intellectual base, practical skills, and ethical perspective needed for professional service to information users and to society? The ALISE Task Force on Best Teaching Practices in LIS Education invites you join a discussion forum on the three apprenticeships in professional education described by William M. Sullivan, keynote speaker for the 2007 ALISE conference and author of Work and Integrity: The Crisis and Promise of Professionalism in America (Jossey-Bass, 2005). The forum can now be accessed at http://attila.coe.ecu.edu/talk/COE/ALISE https://www.exchange.iu.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://attila.coe.ecu.... To login use: ID: alise and Password: alise Sullivan's work introduces a series of studies by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching that will examine and compare the professional education of lawyers, physicians, nurses, engineers, and clergy. With a mission to educate for professional judgment and performance, Sullivan argues, professional programs seek to enable their students to integrate specialized knowledge and specific skills within the profession's commitment to clients and society. (Work and Integrity, p. 207) Join us to discuss how Sullivan's model applies to graduate professional education in library and information science and to share examples of teaching practices that characterize each of the apprenticeships: The first apprenticeship is intellectual, focused on the knowledge base of the field, and characterized by reasoning, argument, and research. The second is practical, the body of skills needed to be a competent practitioner. The third is ethical, including the skills, traits, responsibilities that characterize a professional. In keeping with the 2007 ALISE conference theme, "Habits of Mind and Practice: Preparing Reflective Professionals," we encourage you to reflect on how our teaching practices shape the professional skills and attitudes of our graduates. We welcome your participation.
