Dear Dr. Mohan Many thanks for sharing your experience with NewGenLib. Undoubtedly, NewGenLib has moved several steps ahead in making the software not only functionally excellent but also especially suitable for the not unpeculiar Indian needs, the support team has shown exceptional committment to resolving problems faced by many of its users in India and overseas. What is even more remarkable is that NewGnLib has done all this without a modicium of support from any governmental or quasi-governmental agency. In any other country, the team would have got considerable encouragement, and financial and infrastructural support. On the other hand bodies such as Universities think that a small company can be bullied into submission. I know this because when I was closely associated with the software, I had to deal with some of these Mahashayas (librarians included). I am no longer associated with the software today as closely as before, but still do provide them with leads that might help. I am extremely proud of the team and its continued committent. Dear Everyone, I join with the colleagues to recommend NewGenLib for any library. I am glad to note that NGL has gone into several changes to suite our needs. I have recommended this to several theological colleges in India. As Secretary of Indian Theological Library Association, I have no hesitation to recommend this to my colleagues across the country. As rightly pointed out by Dr. Haravu and others that NGL has been developed to meet our library needs. It is a surprising fact to know that this software is developed without funding assistance from state or central govt agencies. I would like to recommend to the development team at NGL to look into possibilities of developing a feature for importing MARC records (bulk) from other libraries/ or MARC file. I congratulate the entire team at NGL for spending their time and energy to make this programme suitable for libraries. May I suggest that many of us who are knowledgeable in software development to give support to the team for further development of this software. Also suggestions from professionals will help the developers to carry this forward to new heights of excellence. Even though I am not an active user of NewGenlib, I had opportunity to interact with Shri.Haravu and Shri.Siddarth and learnt a lot about the software. In fact, I consider Shri.Haravu as my first Guru in this field as he gave me the first lessons in library automation when he was working at ICRISAT, Hyderabad. He did pioneering work in library automation using dBase and BASIS, in mid 80s. He has shared and incorporated his rich and practical experience while developing NewGenlib and fully implemented MARC21 standard much before many commercial software could do so. They also used open source RDBMS known for open data standard. Shri.Siddarth has carried forward the research and has offered help to many libraries to install and implement the software, free of cost, including data conversion and maintenance. Shri.Siddarth, despite his extreamly busy schedule, made invaluable contribution as a resource person during two national workshops conducted at our institute on MARC21. I thankfully acknowledge their contribution and their yeoman's service to the library community. thanks, G.K.Manjunath Chief Librarian IGIDR, Mumbai -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
