17 May - World Information Society Day World Information Society Day is celebrated each year on 17 May to remind the world of the vision of the World Summit on the Information Society to build “a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented information society” based on fundamental human rights. UNESCO refers to these societies as Knowledge Societies based on four fundamental principles: freedom of expression, universal access to information and knowledge, respect for cultural and linguistic diversity, equal access to quality education. This year, UNESCO dedicates the Day to the principle of universal access to information and knowledge. Post a slogan for UNESCO's celebrating World Information Society Day 2008 on the theme of respect for cultural and linguistic diversity. World Information Society Day 2008 will be devoted to the principle of respect for cultural and linguistic diversity. UNESCO invites everybody to submit proposals for a slogan on the theme of respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.
