The use of both scientometric data and archives will be illustrated with specific examples. I shall narrate the stories of what I learnt of Sambhu Nath De, who discovered cholera toxin in Kolkata, Dorothy Hamre who discovered the coronavirus in Chicago, Bijoor Sanjiva Rao who isolated morellin at IISc and William Mock who rediscovered a 1905 paper and found the remarkable molecule, cucurbituril.
