Indian Railways (IR), one the largest passenger and goods transportation network has been using the communication systems for its tremendous growth during last 15 years. IR uses the communication systems broadly in the following three categories. -- Operational Communication Systems; Administrative communication systems; and Emergency communication equipment. IR also uses Networked Passenger Information Systems and continuously putting a lot of effort in improving the technology to match the developments and growing user needs and demands. IR is fast adopting itself to most of the communication facilities which are getting shifted to IT based. Emails, Messaging, Social networks such as Facebook, WhatsApp are being extensively used now. While ERP is also getting implemented in phases, Internet of Things (IoT) is likely to be the future for all its operations. The presentation will cover various technologies which are in use, challenges faced in implementing and maintaining and the overall benefits derived by IR through Communication Systems.. About the Speaker ============== Mr. R. Baskaran who hails from Kanyakumari District is an alumnus College of Engineering Guindy with a degree in BE (ECE). After graduation he had taken up a job in ITI, Chennai, where he was involved in developing “High Speed, Magnetically Suspended Rotor for Uranium Enriching” for DRDL, Hyderabad, which is being used by Defence even now for their Nuclear project.In 1986, he joined the Signal & Telecom Department of Indian Railways through UPSC / Indian Engineering Services examination. Since then he has been working in various capacities in Railways at different places spanning 9 states. In all his tenures, Mr. Baskaran has been successful in all his postings and made a mark in major system improvement. Currently, Mr. Baskaran is the Group General Manager at RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, Chennai and is in-charge of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In his current posting, Mr. Baskaran has achieved the distinction of being the market leader in Retail Broad-band segment in RailTel, holding 60% of business in All India level. For this achievement, RailTel has honored him during the Annual Day Celebration on 23rd Sep 2015. Mr. Baskaran is associated with two NGOs -- “V-SEED Society” and “Subbaiah Muthammaal Charity Trust” involved in conducting large number of Career Counselling Programmes for students.
