INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research and Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, Bangalore 560 059 Seminar on Online Retrieval: a fundamental dialogue of basics The civilizations have moved to an age wherein every individual has his/ her needs for information in day-to-day life, whilst in the past it was only a certain small learned group of people who needed information. Moreover, that was an age of information storage (concerned more than retrieval) and this is an age of retrieval, as storage isnt a big problem now. But the big problem is to locate it, after it has been stored in the proverbial huge pool of information. And also the big problem amongst the big problems is to retrieve the most relevant one of all the relevant ones. In this presentation we shall discuss all about the basics of an IR system, manual or automated and further discuss upon: o The information overload o Pre and post coordination in IR systems o Why go for automation and online o The formation of database(s) o Controlled vocabulary o Search techniques o Evaluation of search results In this presentation we will also try to find out, how a user can make subtle decisions and get good results rather than just find faults in information retrieval systems.
