Moving from subscription-based system to different models

Dear Members, Science Europe (www.scienceeurope.org) has just released the briefing paper “Open access business models and current trends in the open access publishing system”. (Available at: http://www.scienceeurope.org/uploads/PublicDocumentsAndSpeeches/SE_Briefing_...) Apparently, the Science Europe Road map contains a clear objective “to move from subscription-based ‘reader-pays’ system to different models for research publications.” The briefing paper presents some of the recent trends and developments, as well as various business models currently in use which aim to facilitate the transition to OA. It also highlights expected benefits and underlines remaining challenges. The short 10 page paper discusses the following five points, benefits and challenges of each: 1. Adding open access requirements to subscription costs 2. Accelerating the transition through offsetting models 3. Capturing key data and need for transparency 4. The variety of business models in the evolving scholarly communication landscape 5. Accelerating the transition of an outgrown publishing system For those of us who are particularly involved licensing journals, this is worth a read. Regards, G.
