Dear Professional Friends, I congratulate new office bearers of KALA - Karnataka State Library Association under the stewardship of Prof. A Y Asundi, who has very rich professional experience and has been very active in activities of KALA since its inception. We have been discussing for many years for making profession more vibrant both form the view of professional activities and uplifting its status. Many LIS Associations in the country have become inactive that too at the time when the status of profession in the country has come down due to many reasons. To cite some example - The post of Librarian has been downgraded in many IITs, IITs, etc. The post is categorized under Administration, like Deputy Registrar - Library. 95% of Library Posts of University and other Higher Education have been kept vacant. Many institutions including R & D have made Scientist/Professor -In- Charge to take care of Library. Many Libraries have been down sized with reduced budget. The concept of University Librarian as a statutory post is gone. We can go on quoting this sort of issues concerned to our profession. Apart from Academic and Research Administrators we too are responsible for this downgrading of professional status. The LIS teaching community and Practitioners should understand that both are dependent on each other for survival of profession. We should support each other instead of pulling each others' leg. Professional Associations can play major in bringing this rapport and work towards uplifting the status of profession. I hope and am sure Prof. Asundi and team of KALA will strive in this direction.
