Shashidhara Prasad Vice Chancellor University of Mysore, Mysore Presides You are cordially invited Date : 27th August 2004 Time : 3.00 P.M. Venue: Einstein Auditorium Department of Studies in Physics Manasagangotri, Mysore 6 Dr. Shalini. R. Urs Professor & Chairperson ------- Abstract of the talk : Data mining services require accurate input data for their results to be meaningful, but privacy concerns may influence users to provide spurious information. In this talk, we discuss whether users can be encouraged to provide correct information by ensuring that the mining process cannot, with any reasonable degree of certainty, violate their privacy. Specifically, we present a scheme, based on matrix-theoretic distortion of user data, that can simultaneously provide a high degree of privacy to the user, retain a high level of accuracy in the mining results, and be efficient with respect to its response times. The performance of the scheme is validated against representative real and synthetic datasets. ------ About the Speaker Jayant Haritsa is on the faculty of the Supercomputer Education & Research Centre and the Department of Computer Science & Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
