INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research & Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE Post Bangalore, 560 059 SEMINAR-4 Information Foraging Theory: Exploring the cognitive aspects of information search behavior ABSTRACT Information foraging theory (IFT) applies the ideas from optimal foraging theory to understand how human users search for information. In the 1970s, optimal foraging theory was developed by anthropologists and ecologists to explain how animals hunt for food. This theory is studied to understand the usage of web resources in order to retrieve information, so as to facilitate different user queries. This phenomenon immediately leads to a conclusive theory of demand and supply of information resources. IFT gives several models and theories to understand information foraging patterns. In the contemporary scenario, library services are changing rapidly in the digital platform. The necessity of knowing information search behavior of internet surfers is the need of the hour. This seminar will demonstrate a brief concept representation touching upon various models, like patch, diet and scent, which will give the foundation to this subject.
